East of Eden on Netflix: Release Date, Cast, Episodes

· 4 min read

Florence Pugh is trending after the New York premiere of her new Netflix series, East of Eden. The limited series is now streaming, and viewers are searching for the same handful of answers: when it came out, how many episodes there are, who is in it and whether they need to read the book first.

Here is a spoiler-light guide to the basics.

What is East of Eden about?

East of Eden is based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel of the same name. The book is one of the best-known American novels of the twentieth century, and Steinbeck considered it his most ambitious work.

The story is set largely in California’s Salinas Valley and follows two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, across generations. At its center is a retelling of the biblical story of Cain and Abel: brothers competing for a father’s approval, and the question of whether people are bound by their nature or free to choose who they become.

The Netflix adaptation puts Cathy Ames at the front of the story. In the novel she is one of literature’s most famous antiheroes, and the series uses her as its main point of view.

East of Eden release date on Netflix

  • Premiere date: October 1, 2026
  • Release style: all episodes at once, worldwide
  • Format: limited series, meaning it tells a complete story in one season

Because it is a limited series, there is no announced second season. The seven episodes are designed to cover the adaptation from start to finish.

How many episodes are there?

There are seven episodes. Since they were released together, you can watch at your own pace, whether that is one a night or the whole series over a weekend.

Individual running times are shown on each episode’s page in the Netflix app.

East of Eden cast

The main cast announced by Netflix includes:

Actor Character
Florence Pugh Cathy Ames
Christopher Abbott Adam Trask
Mike Faist Charles Trask
Hoon Lee Lee
Ciarán Hinds Samuel Hamilton
Joseph Zada Caleb “Cal” Trask
Joe Anders Aron Trask

Florence Pugh is also an executive producer. Entertainment outlets additionally list Tracy Letts and Martha Plimpton in the cast. For the complete list, see the cast section on the title’s Netflix page.

Who made the series?

The series was adapted by Zoe Kazan, who is known as both a writer and an actor. There is a family connection to the material: her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film version of East of Eden, which starred James Dean.

Kazan wrote the series, with some episodes co-written with Alexander Chee. Garth Davis directed episodes one through four, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed episodes five through seven.

The 1955 film covered only the later part of the novel. A seven-episode series has room for much more of the book, including the earlier generations and Cathy’s backstory.

How to watch East of Eden

East of Eden is a Netflix original, so it is available only on Netflix.

  1. Open Netflix on your TV, phone, tablet or browser.
  2. Search for “East of Eden.”
  3. Choose the 2026 limited series.

You need an active Netflix subscription. Netflix offers several plans at different prices, including a lower-cost plan with ads; plan details and prices vary by country and change from time to time, so check Netflix’s site for the current options. Downloads for offline viewing are available on some plans.

Do you need to read the book first?

No. The series is made to stand on its own, and you can follow it without knowing the novel.

That said, reading the book afterward can be rewarding. Steinbeck’s novel is long, around 600 pages in most editions, and spends more time with the Hamilton family and with the narrator’s reflections than any screen version can. If you enjoy the series, the book adds depth rather than repeating it.

Is East of Eden suitable for younger viewers?

The source novel deals with mature themes, and the series is aimed at adults. Netflix shows a maturity rating and content notes on the title’s page; check those before watching with teenagers.
